Brushing up on info: Frequently asked questions about whiteboard paint

The world of writable paint is not a complicated one, but if you’ve never used it before or aren’t a ‘DIY’ kind of person, you’re likely to have some questions. After all, transforming a wall for the first time can be a little daunting, so you’ll want to get things right the first time around.

Well, with ESCREO writable wall paint, it’s hard to go wrong; but we thought it would be a good idea to clear some of the questions we hear most from our customers.

What should I do to prepare the surface?

To get the most from your whiteboard paint, it’s essential to make sure that your surface is as smooth as possible. This applies to wood and wallpaper; especially the so-called ‘orange-peel walls,’ which have a rough texture with lots of microscopic holes and ridges.

To sort it out, all you need to do is sand the wall down or add a layer of joint compound (drywall mud) to fill in the small gaps. For glass surfaces, make sure that they are as clean as possible. Once done, you can move onto the primer!

Do I need to use a primer?

The short answer is yes! The primer helps with your paint application and acts as a bond between the paint and the surface, reducing any risk of the paint being absorbed.

This is a whole other topic that you can read about on our dedicated primer guide.

Can whiteboard paint be applied the same way as regular paint?

Although our paint is designed for easy application, it’s still a little different from regular decorative paint. You should try to avoid stretching the paint out too thin to avoid runs and drips, which could result in a rough or irregular surface for writing or drawing.

For more information, visit our guides on how to apply whiteboard paint.

How long does the paint take to dry?

When using high-quality ESCREO whiteboard paint, it’ll typically feel dry to the touch after around 8 hours – but please don’t use it for a further 72 hours to get the full effect.

What are the different types of paint I can try?

Since our original whiteboard paint, we’ve expanded our product line to give our customers even more ways to be productive and have fun! Here are the main types of writable paint on offer:

What surfaces can I write on?

With ESCREO, you can paint and write on pretty much anything! Walls and wallpapers are the most popular surfaces that our customers like to paint on, but other popular options are:

Wood – Please make sure that you have fully sanded down the area to make it as smooth as possible. If you decide to go for multiple coatings of primer, sand down after each coating to be safe.

Glass – For glass, you can either use our white primer or clear writable paint. Just make sure that the glass is as clean as possible before applying.

Can I use the paint outside?

Yes! However, we recommend that your writable surface is located somewhere sheltered from the wind and rain. While our products are tough and can handle UV and direct sunlight, shaded areas are always better in the long run.

What kind of pens should I use?

You can use any dry-erase pens, but we suggest that you use the ones found in our starter pack, found on our accessories page. If you want to use different pens, that’s fine, but please don’t use the cheapest ones as they will never look as good as higher-quality products. Of course, permanent pens aren’t a good idea, but you can still turn things around if you use one by mistake.

Cleaning your wall

ESCREO writable wall paint is pretty low-maintenance, but cleaning it every now and then is a good idea to prevent the build-up of marker inks. To give it a gentle clean, all you need to do is use a water-based cleaning solution (such as the one you can find on our accessories page) together with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. Do not use industrial or highly chemical cleaners.
