Valentine’s Day is a chance for us to show our loved ones just how much they mean to us with gifts, gestures, romance, and love. We are a sentimental lot here at ESCREO so we couldn’t let the day pass without an article from us on this special day about what you can do for your loved ones, and just how much our writable paint can spread the love even further.
How did it all start?
The origins of Valentine’s Day, as well as the legend surrounding its patron saint, are a little foggy. We do know that February has always been associated with passion, and that St. Valentine’s Day (as we know it now) incorporates Christian and ancient Roman traditions.
Valentine’s Day is named after Saint Valentine, a priest who is thought to have discreetly assisted Christian couples in their marriage after it was outlawed by Roman Emperor Claudius II around the year 269.
While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial – which is thought to have occurred around A.D. 270 – others believe that the Christian church chose the middle of February to “Christianise” the pagan Lupercalia celebration – a fertility festival devoted to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.
Valentine’s Day today is celebrated in a variety of ways and is not particularly associated with religion – instead, it’s become a significant commercial event in the calendar. However, that’s not to say you can’t still be romantic…
Valentine’s Day gift and activity ideas
Spend some time on your preferred music streaming service putting together playlists for each other. Choose tracks that bring back memories of your relationship or those you know your partner would enjoy. Then pour a glass of wine, turn on the tunes and sit back for some romantic listening.
Take a hike
Even if it’s chilly where you live, going on a picturesque trek for Valentine’s Day is a terrific way to unplug and relax. Whether you have a favourite area near your home, or you want to attempt one of the top treks in your area, being outside in nature is a special bonding experience for any couple.
One of the finest ways to spend the day with your significant other is to choose a cause you both care about and volunteer together—helping those in need and feeling better connected to each other and the community. Think about animal rescue, homeless soup kitchens or volunteering at a senior-citizen’s care facility.
Be a tourist at home
Is there a local landmark that you’ve always wanted to see? Or perhaps a museum you’ve never visited? Turn into a tourist in your own town or city and cross off one or two of those tasks on your bucket list that you’ve been putting off. Take pictures, join the tourists, and take in the vibe.
Make a scrapbook
Even partners who aren’t very fond of crafts may enjoy this enjoyable pastime. Make a fun book with a history of your times together, old ticket stubs, and other memories you can treasure.
Splash out on a night on the town
There’s no finer time than on Valentine’s Day to dress up and hit an expensive restaurant, followed by a theatre show or fancy bar. Even if you’re married, ‘dating’ your partner on this special day can keep the fire alive.
Take the day off
Take a day off from work to relax and unwind together. Breakfast in bed, a crossword puzzle together, eating snacks and binge-watching your favourite shows and movies makes for a relaxing time.
Going out to eat at a crowded restaurant might be out of budget, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do something at home! You don’t need to be master chefs and cooking together can make for a fun and romantic experience.
At the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong with the classics. Whether it’s for a man or woman, some flowers and chocolates will go a long way if you’re in a rush, have a lower budget or simply forgot to book something. Don’t worry, we won’t tell!
