Valentine\u2019s Day is a chance for us to show our loved ones just how much they mean to us with gifts, gestures, romance, and love. How did it all start?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The origins of Valentine’s Day, as well as the legend surrounding its patron saint, are a little foggy. We do know that February has always been associated with passion, and that St. Valentine’s Day (as we know it now) incorporates Christian and ancient Roman traditions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Valentine’s Day is named after Saint Valentine, a priest who is thought to have discreetly assisted Christian couples in their marriage after it was outlawed by Roman Emperor Claudius II around the year 269.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial – which is thought to have occurred around A.D. 270 – others believe that the Christian church chose the middle of February to “Christianise” the pagan Lupercalia celebration – a fertility festival devoted to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Valentine’s Day today is celebrated in a variety of ways and is not particularly associated with religion \u2013 instead, it\u2019s become a significant commercial event in the calendar. However, that\u2019s not to say you can\u2019t still be romantic\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
